Eliot Furness Porter (1901-1990) was an American photographer best known for his intimate colour photographs of nature. Porter began to photograph birds and landscapes with a Kodak box camera as a child at his family's summer home in Maine. He studied chemical engineering at Harvard University in 1924 and went on to graduate from Harvard Medical School in 1929 where he subsequently taught and researched until 1938. Ansel Adams described Porter as "master of nature's color," and Porter's contemplative intimate landscapes bear witness to his enduring affection and respect for the wilderness and its animal inhabitants.
