Alan Davie (1920-2014) was born in Grangemouth into a family of professional musicians and artists. He had a varied career as a painter and also as a jazz musician, a poet, a jeweller and a printmaker. He achieved prominence in the 1950s and 1960s, exhibiting in London and New York and became acknowledged as an Abstract Expressionist, although he would refute being part of this or of any other movement considering himself an outsider artist. Success helped foster his creativity and from the early 1970s onwards he divided his time between St Lucia in the West Indies and Britain. Alan Davie has had a prolific career and has written extensively and eloquently about his working process. Towards the end of his life Davie became a Patron of Art in Healthcare and this limited edition print was created to enable the charity to raise funds.

NHS Fife recognises the importance that art plays in creating an environment conducive to good health and well being. Our collection of artwork is intended to be enjoyed by patients, their visitors and staff alike.
