Gernot Kissel, born 1939 in Worms on the Rhine, Germany, was an Engineer and Architect. A self-taught painter, he started painting at 18. Kissel’s still life and landscapes are typical expressionist pieces, made with bright colours and strong lines. Kissel is best known for his female portraits painted with an assurance that creates a direct and powerful sense of the sitter’s personality. Kissel's work compares to that of famous German expressionists who were very much in fashion during the twentieth century. His paintings have been exhibited in Germany, Newcastle and New York and many of his paintings feature in museums and in private collections around the world.
