The painterly strokes here capture the movement of a boat on the sea, and the tumultuous nature of the water. The vivid colours and contrast heighten this tension, and the frenzied mark-making details the high winds. The viewer can imagine a stormy sea, with the dark clouds in the distance and the water turning dark. The red flag on top of the sails dances about, like a ribbon in the wind.
